Manufacturer "lifetime" warranties cover manufacturing defects — full coverage for a non-prorated window (typically around 10 years), prorated after. They do not cover installation errors, storm damage, or flashing leaks. Your protection against those is the contractor's own workmanship warranty and your homeowner's policy. Ask every roofer for their workmanship terms in writing; walk away from anyone who changes the subject.
Standing seam runs two to three times the cost of architectural shingles, lasts 40–70 years, sheds wind and snow, and reflects summer heat. Staying 15+ years or roofing your forever home? Metal pencils out. Likely to sell within ten? Architectural shingles deliver the resale look for far less up front.

GAF Timberline HDZ typically wins on wind warranty and price; Owens Corning Duration's SureNail strip makes for very secure nailing; CertainTeed Landmark is the heaviest shingle with the most colors. Installation quality affects your roof's lifespan more than the brand.

Shingles curling, cracking, or shedding granules (check your gutters for granule buildup), bald spots, multiple leaks, daylight in the attic, or simply a roof past 20–25 years old. One localized leak usually means a repair; widespread granule loss and brittleness mean the repair money is better spent on replacement.
